Workover, Cleaning & Stimulation of Geothermal Wells

GeoIndustry performs interventions on geothermal wells differentiating between two types of actions;

.- MINOR Interventions; are those that imply an improvement in the productivity of geothermal wells and where we include scraping and milling obstruction works, cleaning in general and stimulation through chemical processes.

.- MAJOR interventions; are those that focus on more complex activities, where the integrity of the geothermal well is seriously affected. Here we include Plug & Squeeze cementing and casing repair activities through our Casing Patch proprietary tool, fishing works due to loss of tools in the well, re-entry operations to replace the production liner or replacement of geothermal wellheads.

In addition, we have tools that allow us to continuously monitoring temperatures and pressures throughout the entire geothermal well in order to evaluate the result of our improvement operations.

Cleaning and Stimulation activities
with Drilling RIGS

Repair work does not require such deep equipment, so many times, geothermal developers themselves have RIGS or drilling rigs and do not want to hire outside teams to carry out maintenance work.

GeoIndustry adapts these activities to the client’s teams by focusing on three main tasks;

.- We study the general concepts about the current RIG or the selection of the most suitable drilling platform taking into account the tasks of Rig-Up, Rig-Down and mobilization of RIG.

.- Analysis of the drilling equipment through our certified professionals.

.- We carried out an integration work along with the geothermal operator. We design and direct the operations, whether drilling or workover operations, together with the geothermal operator’s own personnel. In case the operator does not have specialized personnel, we provide the necessary professionals.

Regarding the cleaning and intervention of chemical stimulation activities with RIG, it requires the control of the geothermal well and it must be cooled or “killed”.

Stainless Steel Capillary Tubing
GOLDSTAR & GEOINDUSTRY

GeoIndustry has joined forces with GoldStar Group and we have jointly created a catalog of proprietary own Geothermal Tools and well intervention materials.

When carrying out scaling activities, one of the available techniques is to carry out chemical treatments through capillary tubing.

The following steps are taken

.- Analysis
.-Diagnosis
.-Treatment Selection
.-Performance
.-Monitoring and Control

Our capillary tubes can be manufactured seamless or welded, tested and inspected for maximum strength and performance.

All parts are designed under ASME standards and guidelines for low and high pressure piping.

This type of intervention is carried out with the so-called Spooler or mobile reels that allow the flexible pipe to be lowered without problems.

Cleaning and Scraping of
Geothermal Wells

Each geothermal field has a series of wells that, due to their mechanical characteristics at the time of their design and the chemistry that interacts with them, make them unique.

The obstruction processes are due to the peculiarities of the geology and the chemistry that interacts inside the wells, so both the size of the obstruction and the frequency with which it occurs are very particular.

There is therefore the possibility of carrying out cleaning and completion tools tailored to the unique characteristics of each geothermal field.

Geothermal Wellhead Replacement

GeoIndustry performs replacement of geothermal well heads for the change of main shut-off valves.

We have our own developed Geothermal Tools (link) and for this particular job we have two types of packers or recoverable packers.

WR RECOVERABLE BRIDGE PLUG â„¢

It is a versatile and reliable non-rotational tool that combines the advantages of cable setup with easy and reliable retrieval.

TTU RECOVERABLE BRIDGE PLUG â„¢

The plug will be stressed or compressed, making it ideal for both shallow applications in the case of wellhead testing or substitution, as well as deep high pressure applications and stimulation work.

Geothermal Fishing Activities

This type of work is carried out when measuring tools fall into the well or any other type of tools in general.

When performing fishing services, the recovery of semi-permanent packing and plugs that can be recovered using specialized tools called “Retrieving Tool” is included.

Gasket/plug retrieval tools use mechanical and hydraulic systems.

We design and customize tools based on the mechanical characteristics of the wells.

We have extensive experience in the success of this type of work.

Plug & Squeeze and Casing Patch

Corrosion is a very harmful effect for geothermal wells that can affect them even a few months after being drilled.

This deterioration process can occur in the different zones of a well and the first thing that has to be done is a series of evaluation works, in order to identify the zone or zones to be repaired. There are two ways to fix it;

A solution for this type of repair is through the forced cementation or plug & squeeze technique where cement is pumped from the surface to plug the leak. It is not an easy operation.

On the other hand, if the crack is very continuous and affects several areas of the casing, you can opt for our own Casing Patch developed tool. This technique is very effective since the internal diameter is not lost and it has very positive results.

Wireline/Slickline

Another of the techniques available for the stimulation and cleaning of geothermal wells consists of the use of mechanical tools for scraping and descaling the blocked casings.

This type of work has the advantage of not having to cool or kill the well.

It is important to point out that these types of operations are not as effective compared to a drilling RIG or to a flexible pipe or Coil Tubing, but economically it is good to have them as an option to be evaluated.

Reentry or Liner substitution

Blockages that occur in geothermal casings can occur along the entire length of the wellbore.

Depending on the characteristics of the geothermal field, these obstructions tend to form more strongly at a particular depth.

Sometimes, the obstructions occur on the face of the reservoir itself and this type of situation is the most complex because the cleaning tasks are increasingly ineffective.

It could also be the case that the perforated production liner breaks and cannot be recovered through fishing tasks.

It is therefore time to perform a reentry operation with a tool called Whipstock.

The whipstock, or deviation wedge, is a tool that generates a change in the trajectory of an already drilled well by making window openings in a single trip in cased or uncovered holes.
